Why Is Rail Hi Vis Orange and Not Yellow?

Why Is Rail Hi Vis Orange and Not Yellow?

Walk onto most construction sites and you will see yellow. Walk onto the rail network and everything turns orange. It is not a style choice. Orange hi vis is a requirement on Network Rail infrastructure, and wearing yellow will get you turned away at the gate.

Rail uses orange high visibility clothing because it stands out against the environments rail workers operate in, and because it identifies them as authorised to be on or near the line.

The requirement is set by RIS-3279-TOM, the Rail Industry Standard for high visibility clothing. Yellow hi vis certified to EN ISO 20471 is perfectly legal on a building site. It is not accepted trackside.

Why orange works better on the railway

A driver approaching at line speed has very little time to process what is ahead. Consistency matters as much as brightness. When every authorised person on the network wears the same colour, the eye picks them up faster.

While yellow performs well against dark urban backdrops, it loses ground against the green vegetation that lines most of the network, particularly in summer, and could be mistaken for a green light. Orange separates cleanly from all of it.

Is yellow hi vis ever acceptable on rail?

Not for work on or near the line. If the task falls under Network Rail infrastructure requirements, the garment needs to be orange and certified to RIS-3279-TOM.

Some depot, yard and station roles operate under different site rules. Always check with the responsible person rather than assuming, because the cost of getting it wrong is a worker stood down.

Does the orange colour fade?

Hi vis works through fluorescent fabric that stands out in daylight and retroreflective tape that returns light at night. Both degrade with washing, sunlight and contamination. Once the fluorescence drops below the required level, the garment is no longer compliant, no matter how much wear is left in the fabric.

Check the maximum wash cycles on the label, since it varies by fabric. Then hold a garment next to a new one in daylight every few months. If the orange looks washed out or pink toned, it has gone.

What about the reflective strips?

Orange fabric alone is not enough. RIS-3279-TOM also sets where the retroreflective banding must sit and how much of it a garment must carry.

This is why rail trousers have their own banding rather than relying on the jacket above. Upper body and lower body garments are assessed separately, then work together to give full coverage.

An orange polo worn with plain navy work trousers is not a compliant outfit.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why do railway workers wear orange?
Orange high visibility clothing is required on Network Rail infrastructure under RIS-3279-TOM. It contrasts strongly with rail environments and identifies workers as authorised to be on or near the line.

Can I wear yellow hi vis on the railway?
No. Yellow hi vis certified to EN ISO 20471 is not accepted for work on or near the line. Rail work requires orange garments certified to RIS-3279-TOM.

What is the difference between EN ISO 20471 and RIS-3279-TOM?
EN ISO 20471 is the general standard for high visibility clothing and sets the class system. RIS-3279-TOM is the rail specific standard, which requires orange colour, defined banding positions and certification marking. Meeting EN ISO 20471 alone does not clear you for the line.

Do rail trousers need to be hi vis?
Yes. Rail trousers carry their own retroreflective banding. Compliance is assessed across the whole outfit, not the jacket alone.

How often should rail hi vis be replaced?
Check the maximum wash cycles stated on the garment label, and inspect regularly for fading, cracked tape and contamination. Any of those takes the garment out of service.
